A Vegetables by Bayer business solution with sustainable credentials
A CHALLENGE TO ADDRESS, BY A COMMITED SEED COMPANY
Traditional seed coatings used for vegetable seed treatment, that facilitate successful seed germination and protect emerging young plants, are based on synthetic, oil derived components in which plant protection products (fungicides in this case) are embedded to make them more useful as seed treatments.
Seed treatment, seed handling and seed planting are processes where Bayer employees and growers can be exposed to dust, containing chemicals from seed coatings and treatments.
How to develop a seed coating with better profile for seed handlers was a challenge tackled by the Bayer’s Global Seed Technology team.
FINDING A SHARED VALUE SOLUTION
The Global Seed Technology team worked on the concept of a new coating based on side stream potato starch, that is potato starch produced as a by product of potato processing.
After technical assessment, potato starch seed coatings have shown excellent dust reduction properties, while also being easily removed with water from coating machines.
This coating represents a sustainable alternative to synthetic oil derived embedding products, as this innovation offers benefits for both growers and Bayer seed processing operators. Also, it offers a reduced environmental impact from raw material use and environmental exposure, illustrated in the scheme below:
