Seeds are living organisms; careful handling and good storage can contribute to their high performance. Vegetables by Bayer recommends using vegetable seed in two years or less from purchase (depending on the crop). The following information can help achieve a good shelf life.
High temperatures and humidity can affect seed by reducing its vigor and ability to germinate. Therefore, seed should be stored in a cool, dry area, out of the sun, and in unopened packages. Vegetables by Bayer packs its seed at industry-recommended moisture percentages, and packages must be kept unopened to prevent humidity from damaging the seeds. Cans, foils, and pouches are air and watertight.
When seed is shipped, it is advised to maintain the temperature and humidity conditions mentioned above. Avoid exposure to high temperatures or fluctuation in temperature during transport. Transporting seeds in temperature-conditioned containers is recommended. It should not be stored near a heat source or in direct sun.
It’s important to handle seed carefully to avoid damaging it. Seeds have a hard but fragile coating that protects the living organism within. Bean, pea, sweet corn, and pelleted seeds are especially susceptible to damage from rough handling (skin cracks or broken pellets). Bags of these seeds should not be thrown or dropped because the seed coats and embryos can crack, resulting in a seed that won’t develop properly.
Vegetables by Bayer recommends that all seed be used in two years or less from purchase. A germination test update by an ISTA-accredited lab is advised on carry-over inventory, with a minimum of once per year before the sowing period.
