Spring is right around the corner! For a lot of home gardeners, it is time to select the perfect seeds for their gardens. Planning for a garden is an important step for home gardeners, and is beneficial for many reasons. Beyond helping you create the ideal garden you want, it helps ensure you have success throughout the year, increasing the return from your garden, and enhancing its beauty.
While there are many approaches and consideration people take when they are planning their garden and selecting what they would like to plant, here are a few of our favorite methods:
Plant the Classics
They are classics for a reason! There are certain crops that thrive in home gardens and planting these will help ensure success. As for varieties – same rule applies. If you have a favorite tomato, continue to go with what works. There’s something to “mastering” certain varieties and caring for them to get the most out of them. Better Boy, Big Beef, and Celebrity are a few examples of tomato “classics” we love.
Try Something New
Whether it’s a new color, shape, flavor, or you saw it on a cooking show and you just have to try out a new recipe…Have you ever grown Eggplant? Maybe it’s time you plant some in your garden! Is there something in particular you’ve been dying to try? Go for it! Just don’t forget to brush up on planting tips for that variety to help get the best results.
Plan for the Seasons
Many varieties perform well in cold weather and can be planted immediately after the last frost in the Spring, and will likely last only a few months. Others will need to be planted later and will produce great tasting produce all year long. Make a quick calendar with planting and harvest dates for each and you can maximize the space in your garden and have healthy and productive plants all year.
Think About Space
Whether you have a small patio or a large garden space, you can plant all different kinds of vegetables thanks to varieties bred for smaller spaces. Don’t hesitate to get creative either, with some unique planters to maximize how you plant.
Share the Bounty
The best part of having a garden is having more vegetables than you know what to do with. Give some to your Mom, babysitter, brother in-law, trade with your neighbors; whomever. Be proud of what you’ve grown.. and don’t forget to use some of your homegrown veggies in your favorite recipes!
