Confidence on every level – taking action against ToBRFV

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is a viral disease impacting tomato plants that is spreading rapidly around the world. ToBRFV transmits easily, can decimate crops, and is difficult to eradicate.

At Vegetables by Bayer, our industry-leading R&D team is working to provide long-lasting, science-based solutions. We developed extensive protocols to support seed health and quality, and we’re testing new varieties under grower conditions to evaluate effectiveness.

Learn why ToBRFV is a challenge for us all

Our colleagues Jan Kamper, Market Development Lead, and Jan Cees Bron, Corporate Communications, tell you more about the ToBRFV virus and why it is a big challenge for us all.

Preventing and detecting ToBRFV

Lessons learned in practice have proven it is possible to effectively counter ToBRFV infections. These guidelines and best management practices can help you grow non-ToBRFV and Intermediate Resistant (IR) ToBRFV varieties successfully.

SHIELD - Proactive protection for every seed

Our SHIELD program focuses on the prevention and detection of pathogens, like ToBRFV, at our production and processing sites.

Tomato rootstocks are the basis of a highly productive crop. Healthy roots help enable good water and nutrition uptake, especially under harsh conditions. Strong rootstock with endurance and a good root system can support plant development, which may help minimize the severity of symptoms throughout the season.

There is little information about ToBRFV in the roots of tomato plants. The effect of the rootstock in relation to the scion and ToBRFV levels has not yet been investigated, so Vegetables by Bayer conducted trials under glasshouse conditions in The Netherlands.

Breeding efforts and testing

At Vegetables by Bayer, we continuously innovate for long-term solutions to challenges like ToBRFV. Because we know our growers need reliable varieties they can trust, we invest in thorough research and testing to provide quality seeds with high marketable yield potential.

We are focused on rapidly obtaining durable and high levels of ToBRFV resistance in combination with excellent agronomic performance and consumer and retail benefits. One way to achieve durable resistance is by stacking multiple resistance genes. This is a stepwise process where we expect resistance levels to increase over time.

Developing varieties with a high ToBRFV resistance

Ton Allersma, Research Associate Phytopathology, tells us more about disease resistance and how we are working to develop varieties with higher resistance to ToBRFV.
